Design for Editors

Our normal topic and professions page has a common layout shown below.

The top row, are diamond buttons so define these as a separate list, usually this helpful information, lists, diamond 1 is usually a description of the sites on your buttons, diamond 2 a  BOTB page for the same topic, and likewise. if you have more than 5 then the 5th button goes to a diamond index and lists the diamond pages you have. See diamond pages on the development/editors menu.

The button blocks come next usually UK sites, then USA, followed by those elsewhere. If you need a different arrangement because nationality of site is not relevant then let us know what is needed. The positions of the buttons are letters a, b, c... across the top and numbered rows down the page

On the right of the main table is the 'See Also' list containing other pages and resources on start-page.

Under the main tables is the reference number for the page, and details on the editor and how to contact them.

The advantages of a common design is that people will become familiar and comfortable with it. However there may be occasions when a different arrangement of table elements may be more suitable, for example when the nationality of the site is not relevant.

Sometimes the button approach will not be suitable because the topic has too many buttons, for example all local newspapers in the UK, in these cases we have chosen instead to build this large index into UK-list, again this is something an editor can manage or create, that can be linked to a page or a resource that is directly selected instead of a page. Where the amount or variation of information gets greater still we look at it becoming a sub site in value-plus, or a separate friendly site. None of this involves you the editor in any cost, we take care of all web site and development costs.
